Chapter Ten

As another year dawned Emma and William talked long into the night as they often did when there were changes afoot or problems to solve. They were happy for Janet and Brian and accepted they were to be married in June. Until their meeting with Albert Barclay they had not realised Peter would also be getting married and leaving Moorend before the end of the year when Helen was eighteen, but William knew Albert Barclay was giving Peter a great opportunity as well as welcoming him into his family as the son he had never had.

‘We have to be happy for Peter,’ William mused, ‘and Helen is a lovely lassie.’

‘She is, and she’s very capable and mature, and more importantly they clearly love each other,’ Emma said. ‘We must adapt to the changes and accept that our family are all making lives of their own.’

‘Yes,’ William sighed. ‘It is the way of life. I think that is what my mother could not accept, me being the youngest and intending to marry. I have been thinking of the changes we must make at Moorend. I would have considered sending some of our own herd to Alan and Lynn at Mountcliffe to reduce the number of milking cows to what you and I, David, Polly and Tom can manage on our own,’ William said uneasily, ‘but Alan will miss Peter’s help at Mountcliffe as much as we shall, especially with another wee Sinclair on the way. He turned restlessly in the big bed and drew Emma into his arms. ‘As it is I shall sell . . .’ he yawned, ‘sell some of the newly calved heifers in the spring. They will raise some of the money towards paying Peter his share as well as reducing the work a bit for us.’

‘It makes me sad when any of our children move out,’ Emma said softly, ‘but we have always known it must happen and we do want them to be happily married and with our blessing. Don’t you agree?’

‘Aye, aye my lassie, I do. We never had my parents’ blessing and I always vowed I wad do ma best for all our bairns. I just didn’t expect two of them leaving within the same year, but they have all been lucky so far — except for John.’

‘At least he died for his country,’ Emma said sadly. ‘He wouldn’t have wanted us to grieve for him.’

‘I expect we shall find a solution eventually. You and Polly have more than enough to do with two men living in the house as well as helping with the milking twice a day and looking after the poultry.’

‘I expect it would have been the same if the men had slept in a bothy as they do in Scotland. They would still need their meals and their washing done.’

‘Aye, if only Moorend had a farm cottage for a worker . . . Maybe yours is the best idea, Emma to try and get a man to live in the Mountcliffe cottage and cycle to work.
